Aloha means hello and goodbye
A recent picture of Emery and Joey Carney. Joey was born 9 days before Emery. My daughter is the one on the left, sweetly attempting to take Joey by the hand. Joey is on the right, trying to gnaw his left hand off.
Em has taken to looking around the room more. Here, she's stopped crying in her swing long enough to notice her surroundings.
Grammy holding Emery for the first time. Can you tell whose first grandchild it is? We went to the Big Island of Hawaii with my parents for a few days of R&R. This was the amazing view from our bedroom. Everynight we fell asleep listening to the ocean crash down. Though it was painful for my dad, they were so kind to give us the master suite so that Emery would have the sounds of the ocean to fall asleep to. I think my mom fell asleep to my dad whimpering at night that he no longer had this view. With built in babysitters, Tracy and I had a much needed date night. We enjoyed a delicious meal, some wine, and each others company. It was almost like our honeymoon again.
We took a car around the entire island one day. Tracy had to stop at her favorite--hawaiian sweet bread. I think she ate an entire loaf while I was in the bathroom. Mom and Tracy getting ready to go out for Tracy's 31st birthday dinner (a few days early) . We had a nice table right on the water and watched the sunset. Tracy was in Mexico for her 30th, Hawaii for her 31st. I've made reservations already for Dubai for my 32nd. Emery was unable to look away from the sun-colored shirt her grandpa was wearing. This was an absolute favorite position for Emery. When in doubt and she turned up the cranky machine, her Tata would put her on his chest and she'd be out in no time. We started calling him the golden touch. Then she pooed on him and that stopped all the golden talk. Gotta have one beach picture in Hawaii right?
This picture became the running joke. Throughout the condo were paintings by the owner of the property (pretty talented). Emery was transfixed by this particular picture and wouldn't take her eyes off of it. When she cried we'd plop her in front of it and that would bring an end to her fussiness. Don't think I didn't contemplate "borrowing" the picture...
On a day trip, we went to visit an active volcano. Though there was no "liquid magma" to be seen, we did see some venting steam which was fairly picturesqe.
We also walked through lava tunnels like this one. These were created by lava that cooled. I think I would have loved this even more had I gone after 4th grade geology. I was hoping to see lava burn stuff... Grammy and Tata and Em. Although Em is crying, her mom and dad were so grateful to join you for a fun trip. I'll cherish that her first vacation was with family to such a beautiful setting. Em, you were such a champ on all four plane flights, like the return flight above. You slept, you ate, and you got so many compliments from stewards, passengers, and even a captain. Ten years from now when you are running and playing in the water and the sand, unable to sit still on a vacation such as this, I'll be reminded of the little girl that I put on my chest and watched the sun go down at night, so thankful you've come into our lives.
